Oceans of Silver and Blood at Cafe Oto
26 August, 2008

Oceans of Silver and Blood at Cafe Oto SUNDAY 21st September 2008

Doors 6pm / Performance 7pm

Tickets : £5 (no advance sales)

Oceans of Silver and Blood is the name given to a new drone project from Joachim Nordwall and Mark Wastell.

Instigated in early 2007, the group has performed twice previously in London, of which The Wire magazine commented "The ear was drawn to the overlay of acoustic and electronic, as Wastell set the rich overtones of the tam-tam against Nordwall's electronics. At times, the tam-tam took on ghostly shimmer alongside the Swede's monolithic tones and the pair really probed the acoustics of the performance space".

Just returned from a sell-out concert at Lampo in Chicago, this concert celebrates the release of their debut vinyl LP.

Mark Wastell (b. 1968, Orsett) "Over the last 40 odd years, free improvisation in Britain has shown itself capable of renewal and innovation on several occasions. Mark Wastell has made an important contribution to this renewal over the last ten years as a performer, through his record shop sound 323, and his publishing activity. His work has generated sufficient interest and influence for it to attract new movement and genre labels from writers and critics, and it has sent ripples through both UK and international improvised music. However, no sooner has one label been applied, than Mark has moved on to new territory". (Stuart Riddle - Safehouse)

Joachim Nordwall (b. 1975, Karlskrona), the Idealist, began experimenting in sound in 1987, when he formed the noise-drone outfit Alvars Orkester with Jan Svensson in Johannishus, a small village in the south-east of Sweden. From 1998-2005, he was part of the avant punk rock trio Kid Commando. In 1998, he also founded iDEAL Recordings, which this year marks its tenth anniversary. He has collaborated with many artists, including Leif Elggren, Lasse Marhaug, Mika Vainio and Mats Gustafsson, and he is a founding member of experimental rock band the Skull Defekts (with Henrik Rylander). Recent curatorial projects include his "24 Hour Drone People", a marathon concert at Fylkingen in Stockholm that included Stephen O'Malley, Hild Sofie Tafjord, C. Spencer Yeh, C.M. von Hausswolff and B.J. Nilsen, as well as Wastell, Vainio, Rylander and Nordwall himself, among others. He lives and works in Gothenburg.

Support from DAVID PAPAPOSTOLOU, DAICHI YOSHIKAWA, ROBERT HOPPS, PAUL ABBOT, MARK FLETCHER & DAWN SCARFE + MEL GOUGH
